Frequently asked Quesions about the new Zinc93 Cold Galvanized Coating

Question 1:
What exactly is Zinc93® Cold galvanized coating?
Answer: Zinc93® Cold galvanized coating is a zinc coating of minimum 93% (weight) zinc in the dry layer.

Question 2:
Is Zinc93® a Paint?
Answer: No, it gives the same cathodic protection as hot dip galvanizing, but it is applied as a paint.

Question 3:
If it is not a paint, what can it be compared to?
Answer: It can be compared with hot-dip galvanizing.

Question 4:
Does Zinc93® Cold galvanized coating give the same lifetime expectation as hot dip galvanizing?
Answer: Yes, it does give the same lifetime expectation as hot dip galvanising. It last even 3 times longer under water.

Question 5:
How does Zinc93® work?
Answer: The cold galvanizing acts as an active coupling to the steel parent metal to form an electrolytic bond.

Question 6:
Can we apply any paint on top of the Zinc93® Cold galvanized coating?
Answer: No, always use a compatible paint. Never apply petrol derivates e.g. tarred products.

Question 7:
What is the surface preparation before applying Zinc93® coating?
Answer: The surface of the steel must be clean and free from rust, grease, oil, silicone and all other chemicals.

Question 8:
Can we apply cold galvanizing on top of a paint?
Answer: Yes, but this doesn't make sense. Because there is no direct contact with the parent steel surface there will be no cathodic protection, the Zinc93® coating will only give a passive paint protection.

Question 9:
Is this cheaper than hot dip galvanizing?

Answer: Yes, because one can apply it locally as needed

Question 10:
Can we apply Zinc93® coating on top of old and new hot dip galvanisation?
Answer: Yes, this is the only way of restoring the old cathodic protection of old hot-dip layers. The surface has to be cleaned from loose rust and dirt.

Question 11:
Can we apply Zinc93® coating on light rusted steel?
Answer: Yes, cold galvanization will form a layer of iron hydroxide between the steel surface and the Rust; this layer will act as a rust inhibitor (transformer) preventing therefore any rust formation. The cathodic action will not be damaged. Ideally, it is best to remove all rust before applying Zinc93® coating.

Question 12:
Will there be rust creeping under the Zinc93® coating?
No, Zinc93® coating is not a paint. The Zinc93® "active" cathodic protection is the barrier. Zinc93® coating will remain onto the steel will not rust because of the cathodic effect of the surrounding zinc layer.
